Dussehra or Dasara is an important festival of Hindus. The nine days from Ashvayuja Shuddha Padyami to Ashvayuja Shuddha Navami are called Dasara along with the tenth day of Devi Navratri, Vijaya Dashami. It is a festival mainly focused on Shakti worship. This festival is called Navratri and Sharannavaratri. It got its name because the festival falls in early autumn. Some worship Goddess Parvati for the first three days of this festival, Lakshmi for the next three days and Saraswati for three days. It is mainly practised by Shakteyas.

  • Measuring toys is a custom. In the temples, the Goddesses are decorated each day. On the tenth day of Dussehra festival ‘Vijayadasami’ is celebrated. Telugus celebrate Dussehra for ten days.
  • Before Navratri there is Durga Puja. Bathukamma is played in Telangana for these nine days from Amavasya to Navami. In Telangana villages, it is customary for women to wear silk Peetambaras on every new moon.
  • Vijaya Dashami ‘Dasara’ This festival is known as Vijaya Dashami to mark the victory of good over evil. It is celebrated for ten days. Before Navratri there is Durga Puja.
  • Vijayadashami is not only the day of Rama’s victory over Ravana but also the day when the Pandavas took back their weapons on the Jammi tree while going into exile.
  • Slaughter of Ravana and pooja of jammi leaves are customary on this occasion. On the 10th day, all the people celebrated the festival with joy on the occasion of Goddess Jagan’s mother Durga fighting the demon Mahishasura for nine nights and killing him.
  • Mahishasura, blessed with the boons of Lord Brahma, fought a fierce battle with the gods and defeated them and assumed the throne of Indrapadavi.
  • As Devendra shouted at the three idols, their anger against Mahisha turned into a bright light. The energy of the Trinity is concentrated and born in a female form.
