During these 10 days from Ashviyuja month Shuddha Padyami to Dashami, the Dussehra festival is celebrated all over the country very grandly. These are known as Navratri. Since these Navratri happen in autumn, they are also known as Sharannava Ratri.
Today Dussehra celebrations are celebrated in a grand manner by performing special pooja to Goddess.
According to our Puranic legends, it is mentioned in our Puranic legends that when Mahalakshmi emerged from the seabed on Dashami day when the Deva Danavas were churning the milky ocean, Amrit also emerged. Therefore, the Dashami of Ashvayuja month in Shravana Nakshatra is considered Vijayadashami.
On this day of Vijayadashami, Ashvayuja Shukla Dashami is considered to be the most auspicious time of Nakshatrodaya i.e. dusk.

- At this time it is a very suitable time to start any work. There is no need to see Muhurta, Grahabala etc. for any auspicious work to be done on this day.
- People believe that whatever they do on Vijayadashami day, they will be successful in whatever they do. On Vijayadashami day Sri Rajarajeshwari Goddess should be decorated with red lily flowers and a special pooja should be performed and sugar Pongal should be offered to Goddess.
- It is believed that by reciting Rajarajeshwari Ashtakam 108 times and worshipping the goddess with camphor aartis, one will get all the blessings.
- The devotees should chant Balashadakshari, Lalitapanchadasakshari, Rajarajeshwari Mahashodasakshari and Mahamantras to Amma. Only red clothes should be worn. Red sandalwood, sandalwood, turmeric and saffron should be worn.
- Mother should wear necklaces of pearls, corals and rudraksha. One should have a sense of motherhood and worship mother. Do not use harsh words or abusive language. If scholars, Brahmins and devotees visit, they should be worshipped and honoured according to Shakya. In this way, Navratri Vrata should be performed according to Shakya.
