Maha Navami is the ninth day of Navratri. This year, Navratri will be celebrated across the country on Thursday, October 14. It is the third day of Durga Puja and is celebrated as the victory of good over evil. Goddess Durga is worshipped as Mahishasuramardhi on this day. Because Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura on the ninth day of the battle with Mahishasura. The day before Vijaya Dashami is Mahanavami.

Mahanavami is the worship of Siddhidhatri, the supreme form of great power. On this day, Goddess Durga is worshipped as Mahishasuramardini, the slayer of the demon Mahishasura. This incarnation of Ammavari has immense power. It represents the source of life. Maha Navami Puja is said to be of great importance as the puja performed on this day is believed to be similar to the puja performed on the other eight days of the festival.

Many parts of the country celebrate Kanyappuzha on Ashtami and Navami. Nine children are worshipped as nine forms of Goddess Durga. They wash their feet and give them new clothes.

  • In eastern India, on Maha Navami, the third day of the Durga Puja celebrations, devotees bathe in the morning and perform Shodashopachara Puja in 16 steps. Puja begins with meditation and invocation to invite Durga. In other rituals, five flowers are offered to Goddess Durga and the feet are washed. Amma is offered new clothes, pooja paraphernalia and spices.
  • The Navami Puja moment will begin on October 13 2022 at 8:07 PM and will continue until October 14 2022 at 6.52 PM. Navratri Puja ends with Siddhidatri Devi Puja on the ninth day.
  • The Goddess blesses her devotees with many siddhis. Siddhidatri Devi is four-armed with a staff, wheel, conch and lotus flower. Lord Shiva is said to achieve all his siddhis with the blessings of Siddhidatri.
