Historical evidence suggests that Dussehra celebrations were started here by the kings of Vijayanagara in the 15th century. After the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire, the Udayars, the kings of Mysore, started Dussehra celebrations in Srirangapatna. In 1805, Krishnaraja Udayar III started holding a special Rajdarbar in the Mysore Palace during Dussehra celebrations. Since then it has become a custom.. Even today the descendants continue to hold private Darbhar On Maharnavami, the ninth day of Navratri, the king’s sword is brought along with elephants, horses and camels in a procession and worship is performed. A large number of devotees flock to Mysore Palace and Chamundeshwari Temple to witness the Maharnavami festivities.
