History and legend of Gangamma

According to temple tradition, the shrine takes its name from a 16th-century devotee, Tirumala Thathacharyulu (Tataiah), who is said to have built a gunta (tank) and consecrated the temple beside it. As the Gangamma shrine stood on the banks of Thathaya Gunta, it came to be popularly known as the “Tataiahgunta Gangamma Temple.”

The legend of the goddess is tied to Tirupati’s folk memory. It is said that a local chieftain (Palegadu) terrorised the region and exploited its women, forcing newly-wed brides to come to him first. When the people prayed for protection, Goddess Jaganmata is believed to have been born as Gangamma in the Kaikala family at Avilala village, about 2 km from Tirupati, to end his tyranny. Gangamma is revered as a form of the Mother Goddess and, in local belief, as the younger sister of Lord Sri Venkateswara. This is why the goddess is honoured as the guardian deity of Tirupati town.

Gangamma Jatara — Tirupati’s biggest folk festival

The temple is best known for the Tirupati Gangamma Jatara, an annual week-long folk festival held in the first fortnight of May. During the Jatara, devotees don various veshams (disguises/costumes) in fulfilment of vows, and the streets of Tirupati fill with processions. The ceremonial “Perantalu” disguise is traditionally donned by members of the Kaikala clan, and the festival concludes with the “Chempa Tholagimpu,” when a large clay idol of the goddess is ceremonially dispersed.

A notable feature of the Jatara is that the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) sends a ceremonial gift known as Saare (also called Parisu) — sarees, turmeric, kumkum and bangles — to Goddess Gangamma on behalf of Lord Venkateswara, reflecting the “sister” relationship in local tradition. Exact Jatara dates shift slightly each year with the Telugu calendar, so verify the dates on official announcements before planning a Jatara visit.

Poojas, offerings and darshan

Everyday worship includes Abhishekam (on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays), Nityarchana, Nivedana and Harathi. Tuesdays and Fridays are considered especially auspicious for the goddess, and devotees commonly offer Pongal/Pongallu and light lamps. General darshan is free and open to all pilgrims on ordinary days; no ticket is needed for the normal queue. If any special archana or seva ticket is offered, its availability and cost are set by the temple administration and are best confirmed at the counter, as published rates are not consistently listed online.
