Draksharamam Temple Accommodation — Pilgrim Information Guide

Shiva Venkateswara May 18, 2023 Updated Jul 7, 2026 7 min read

Yes, modest pilgrim accommodation exists at Draksharamam. The Sri Bhimeswara Swamy temple — one of the five Pancharama Kshetras — is administered by the Andhra Pradesh Endowments (Dharmika Parishad) Department, and the devasthanam maintains a small set of cottages/guest rooms for visiting devotees near the temple. Because Draksharamam is a compact temple town rather than a large pilgrimage complex like Tirumala, the accommodation footprint is limited: a handful of devasthanam rooms plus private lodges in the surrounding area and in nearby towns. Allotment of the devasthanam rooms is handled through the temple’s own office and the official AP Endowments channel, not through any private agent or reseller. This guide sets out what is verified, what is best confirmed on arrival, and how the official system works.

About Draksharamam and Sri Bhimeswara Swamy temple

Draksharamam (also spelt Daksharama) sits in the Konaseema region of the erstwhile East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, in the Godavari delta. The temple is dedicated to Lord Bhimeswara Swamy (Shiva) with his consort Goddess Manikyamba, and it holds a rare double distinction in the sacred geography of the Telugu country. It is one of the Pancharama Kshetras — the five ancient Shiva shrines associated with the shattered Shiva Linga after the slaying of the demon Tarakasura — and it is also counted among the Ashtadasha Shakti Peethas, as the seat of Goddess Manikyamba.

The present temple was raised by the Eastern Chalukya dynasty around the late 9th to early 10th century CE, in the reign of King Bhima, after whom the presiding Linga is named. The sanctum is built on two levels, with a tall, pale Spatika (crystal-like) Linga rising through the upper floor. The scale of the deity and the massive prakara walls make Draksharamam one of the most architecturally significant Shiva temples of coastal Andhra, and it draws a steady stream of pilgrims year-round, swelling sharply during Maha Shivaratri and the month of Karthika Masam.

Accommodation at Draksharamam: what is verified

The temple devasthanam maintains a limited number of pilgrim rooms/cottages near the temple, available in both non-air-conditioned and air-conditioned categories, with basic amenities such as beds, attached bathrooms and running water. These are meant for genuine pilgrims and are allotted for short stays. Because the number of rooms is small, they can fill quickly on weekends, on festival days and through Karthika Masam, so it is sensible to reach early in the day and enquire at the temple office rather than assume a room will be free on walk-up.

Beyond the devasthanam rooms, ordinary private lodges and guest houses operate in and around Draksharamam town, and a wider choice of hotels is available in the larger towns nearby — principally Kakinada, Rajahmundry and Amalapuram — which many visitors use as a base and then make a day trip to the temple. This guide does not rate or recommend any private property.

Room categories, tariffs and check-in rules are set by the devasthanam and revised from time to time, so exact rates are best confirmed at the temple office or on the official portal on the day of your visit rather than taken from any third-party page. We deliberately do not publish a fixed price here because unofficial figures circulating online are frequently out of date.

How the official allotment works

Sri Bhimeswara Swamy temple is a notified temple under the Andhra Pradesh Endowments Department, and its sevas and services are listed on the state’s official Temple Management System (TMS) portal. Devasthanam room allotment is administered by the temple’s own office under the Executive Officer. The recognised, official routes are:

  • In person at the temple office — enquire at the devasthanam accommodation/reception counter on arrival for room availability and current tariff.
  • The official AP Endowments portal — the state maintains a single official Temple Management System where the temple’s information, sevas and services are published. Look for Sri Bhimeswara Swamy temple, Draksharamam, on the AP Endowments portal.

Do not rely on private “booking” websites, agents or listings that claim to reserve devasthanam rooms on your behalf — the official channel is the temple office and the AP Endowments portal only.

How to reach Draksharamam

Draksharamam is well connected by road within the Godavari delta. Frequent buses and taxis run from Kakinada (about 28–30 km), Rajahmundry (about 50 km) and Amalapuram (about 25 km), all of which have their own lodging and can serve as a base. The nearest rail points are the small Draksharama/Ramachandrapuram stations a few kilometres away, while Kakinada is the closest major railhead. The nearest airport is Rajahmundry (about 50 km), connected by taxi. Pilgrims combining Draksharamam with the other Pancharama Kshetras often build a circuit by road across the delta.

Practical tips for pilgrims

  • Arrive early on busy days. With only a small block of devasthanam rooms, availability is tightest on weekends, Mondays, Maha Shivaratri and throughout Karthika Masam.
  • Carry valid photo ID. Government-issued identity proof is normally required for room allotment at devasthanam counters.
  • Confirm timings for the day. Darshan and the midday break can shift on festival days; check at the temple before planning your visit.
  • Keep a fallback. If devasthanam rooms are full, Kakinada, Rajahmundry and Amalapuram offer a much wider range of ordinary hotels within an easy drive.

Frequently asked questions

Does Draksharamam temple have its own accommodation?

Yes. The devasthanam maintains a limited number of pilgrim rooms/cottages near the temple in non-AC and AC categories, allotted through the temple office and the official AP Endowments channel.

Can I book devasthanam rooms online?

The temple’s information, sevas and services are listed on the official AP Endowments Temple Management System (tms.ap.gov.in). Availability and the exact online facility can change, so confirm on the official portal or at the temple office; walk-up enquiry at the counter is the most reliable method.

What are the room charges?

Tariffs are set and revised by the devasthanam. We do not publish a fixed rate because unofficial figures are often outdated; confirm the current tariff at the temple office or on the official portal on the day of your visit.

Where else can I stay near Draksharamam?

Private lodges operate in Draksharamam town, and a far wider choice of hotels is available in Kakinada, Rajahmundry and Amalapuram, each within an easy road trip of the temple.

When is accommodation hardest to get?

On weekends, Mondays, during Maha Shivaratri and throughout Karthika Masam, when pilgrim numbers rise sharply. Reach early and keep a nearby-town hotel as backup.

Is this website an official booking site?

No. Tirumala Tirupati Online is an independent pilgrim-information blog with no affiliation to the temple or the AP Endowments Department, and it takes no bookings. Use the official channel only.
