The sacred festival of Govardhan Puja is held on the day after Diwali, which is known as Pratipada. This day falls during the Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month. On this holiest day, the worship of Lord Shri Krishna, Govardhan, and cows take on a very important role. People worship the god Govardhan on the day of Govardhan Puja by building a picture of Govardhan mountain out of cow dung and walking around it in the courtyard of their homes. This is called the “circumambulation.” As a result of the fact that Annakoot is presented as a sacrifice to the Lord on this day, Govardhan Puja is also known as “Annakoot Puja.”

  • Shri Krishna observed that all of the Brijwasis were paying their respects to Indra. When he noticed that his mother was also worshipping Indra, he questioned why people worshipped Indra in the first place.
  • They were informed that the rain would cause crops to grow, which would in turn feed our cows. Then Shri Krishna stated that if this is true, then everybody ought to worship Govardhan mountain because that is where our cows graze.
  • He convinced the people of Braj to abandon Indra in favour of Govardhan Parvat after listening to him. After taking this as an insult, Devraj Indra unleashed a biblical downpour. Then, when it threatened to flood Braj, Krishna hoisted Govardhan Mountain upon his little finger.
  • At that point, Indra learned that Shri Krishna is actually an incarnation of Vishnu and admitted his error. Much later, even Indra Devta felt compelled to apologise to Krishna. Lord Krishna lowered Govardhan Mountain at Indra’s behest and commanded that the Brajwasis worship the mountain at the annual Annakoot festival. After thereafter, it was renamed Govardhan Pooja and has been commemorated annually.
