It is believed that on the evening of Kartik Purnima, the Matsya incarnation of Lord Vishnu took place. On this day, after bathing in the Ganges, the result of donating a lamp is equivalent to ten yagyas. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Angira and Aditya have called it a Mahapunit festival.
