The Chalukya dynasty was in power about the year 600 AD when construction of the Kolhapur Mahalakshmi temple began. The kings of this dynasty were responsible for the construction of this temple. The earthquake that struck in the eighth century and levelled most of the temple may still be seen today, along with the remnants of the building that it left behind.

Due to the fact that the Kolhapur Mahalakshmi temple is located in high and dense forests, people were unable to learn about this temple for a considerable amount of time.
