This goddess is called Parvati, Shakti and Durga by various names. This Chamundeshwari temple is located on the Chamundeshwari Hill, 13 km from Mysore Palace in the Mysore district of Karnataka state. The Maharajas of Mysore worshiped this deity for many years, worshiped it as a caste deity and contributed to the development of this temple by nurturing this temple.
The shrine is believed to have been built by the Hoysala rulers in the 12th century. The temple gopuram was probably built by the Vijayanagara rulers in the 17th century. In 1659, a staircase with a thousand steps to the top of the 3000 feet hill was opened. There are many Nandi images at the temple. At the 800th step on the hill there is a large black stone Nandi statue in front of a small Shiva temple. This Nandi statue is 15 feet high and 24 feet long. There are many beautiful bells carved around the neck of this Nandi idol.
