The most famous temple is Sri Chamundeshwari Temple in Mysore in the southern state of Karnataka. It is located on the top of Chamundi Hill at an altitude of 3,489 feet above sea level. It is 13 km from Mysore. Named after Chamundeshwari or Goddess Durga, this temple is considered one of the Shakti Peethas. It is called Kraunchapeeth.

Dussehra is the famous festival of Mysore. These festivals, which are recognized worldwide, are celebrated with grandeur. The royal dynasties and the government of Mysore organize these events for nine days under the name Nabhuto Nabhavishyat Chandana. Tourists consider this time as the best time to visit Mysore. Dussehra is celebrated here in grand style with colourful electrical decorations and innovative programs.

The Dussehra festival is started in the city only after the pooja at the Dussehra at the Chamundi hills on the first Day.

The Darshan on this day starts at 6 AM and will be available till late night timings

  • In ancient times this area was known as Kraunchapattana. During Ashoka’s time, this region was called Mahishasura Mandal. The temple was developed by the Udaiyar (dynasty king) who ruled the Mysore region in modern times.
  • During the period 1895-1940, this temple flourished. Chamundeshwari temple became the most beautiful temple during that period.
  • This temple stands as a symbol of Dravidian architecture. It has a square structure. There is Navranga Hall, Mantap and Sanctuary. A beautiful seven-tiered gopura or pyramidal tower stands at the entrance.
  • There are two directorates on either side of this entrance. The stone idol of the divine deity in the sanctum sanctorum is decorated daily and worshipped by many priests. ‘Mahisha Mardini’ is seated on the throne with ‘Ashta shirta’ i.e. 8 shoulders. According to local legend, this image was founded by Markandeya Rushi. In the front room of the sanctum sanctorum, there is a magnificent 6 feet statue of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadayar III.
