In the month of January, there are two pakshas: the Shuklapaksha and the Vaisakhapaksha / Krishnapaksha. There are a total of 24 ekadashis in a year, one for each month of the paksha calendar; each of these ekadashis occurs before the full moon of the Amavasya month. The Ekadashi that corresponds to the Ashadha Shukla lunar cycle is believed to be the first Ekadashi.

This particular type of Shuddha Ekadashi occurs 12 times throughout the course of the year.
