Kanuma is one of the festivals of the three-day festival during the Sankranti or the Pongal festival. Normally, the Sankranti festival is celebrated for three days in the South Indian states. On the first day, the Bhogi is celebrated, the second day is the Sankranti or the Pongal festival and the third will be the Kanuma festival. The pilgrims will be doing the Kanuma festival for the cattle mostly. On this day, the pilgrims will be doing the pooja to the cows. Mostly, the pilgrims who have cows will be doing this Kanuma festival on this day. The pilgrims will be decorating the cows and will be taking the cows as the procession. Some pilgrims will also be doing the health checkup for the cows on this day as an annual procedure. The date of the Kanuma festival will not be changing mostly and will be a standard date.

  • The Kanuma festival date for the year 2024 is on 16 January 2024. On this day, the pilgrims will be doing the pooja for the cows in the evenings.
  • In the morning, the pilgrims will be washing and also will be taking the regular health checkup of the cows. In the evening after 4 PM, the pilgrims will be decorating the cows and will be doing the pooja. The cows are also offered good food on this.
  • Once the pooja is completed, the pilgrims will be taking the cow as possession in the streets. The pilgrims who don’t have the cows can celebrate the Kanuma festival by offering pooja to the cows and also food to the cows. It is said that it will bring good fortune on this day if the pilgrims offers the food for the cows.
