The Arulmigu Karpaga Vinayagar Temple at Pillaiyarpatti (Sivagangai district, Tamil Nadu) is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the morning and again from 4:00 PM to about 8:00 PM in the evening. General darshan of Karpaga Vinayagar is free. Sevas and abhishekams follow the temple’s five daily pooja schedule, and tickets for special abhishekam are arranged at the temple’s own counter. For any booking, timing or price confirmation, always rely on the temple’s official channel and the Tamil Nadu HR&CE portal rather than third-party pages, because ritual timings and rates are revised periodically.

About Pillaiyarpatti Karpaga Vinayagar Temple

Pillaiyarpatti is one of the oldest and most revered Ganesha shrines in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity, Karpaga Vinayagar, is a six-foot rock-cut bas-relief carved on the southern face of the cave rock. Unusually, this Vinayagar has only two hands and his trunk curves to the right (valampuri), unlike the four-armed, left-turned-trunk form seen in most later Ganesha images. The name “Karpaga” comes from the belief that the Lord grants devotees’ wishes like the celestial wish-fulfilling tree (Karpaka Vriksham). The temple is a rock-cut cave shrine dated to around the 7th century CE and expanded over later centuries, and it is administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, with the local Nagarathar (Chettiar) community closely associated with its upkeep.

The village lies in Tiruppattur taluk, about 12 km northwest of Karaikudi, roughly 70–75 km northeast of Madurai and a similar distance from Tiruchirappalli (Trichy).

Pillaiyarpatti Temple Darshan Timings

The temple keeps two darshan sessions each day. The morning session opens early for the dawn rituals; the temple closes around midday and reopens in the late afternoon for the evening poojas. Timings can be extended on festival days such as Vinayaka Chaturthi.

SessionTiming (IST)
Morning darshan6:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Evening darshan4:00 PM – approx. 8:00 PM

These hours are per the HR&CE temple listing; some sources note the evening close at 8:15–8:30 PM, so treat the exact closing time as approximate and confirm on the official portal, especially during festivals and the Aadi/Vinayaka Chaturthi periods.

Daily Poojas and Abhishekam Schedule

Like most classical Tamil temples, Pillaiyarpatti follows a five-time (panchakala) daily pooja routine. Abhishekam (ritual bathing of the deity) is performed at set times, and devotees can usually witness it as part of darshan. The approximate schedule is below — exact minutes shift with sunrise/sunset and festival calendars, so verify locally on the day of your visit.

Special abhishekam and archanai on behalf of a devotee are typically arranged at the temple’s ticket counter on site. If an online seva facility is offered, it will be through the temple’s own official website — use only that channel and avoid third-party reseller pages.

Seva / Pooja Prices — What Is Officially Published

General darshan at Pillaiyarpatti is free of charge. For paid sevas such as special abhishekam, archanai, and archana with specific offerings, the temple sets nominal ticket rates that are collected at the counter. A single, fixed, publicly published price list is not consistently available across official sources, and rates are revised from time to time by the temple administration. Rather than quote figures that may be outdated, we recommend confirming the current seva and abhishekam charges directly at the temple counter or on the official temple / HR&CE portal at the time of your visit.
