Rameshwaram Temple Special Darshan Ticket Price Timings Book

Shiva Venkateswara Mar 14, 2023 Updated Jul 6, 2026 6 min read

At the Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, general
darshan of Lord Ramanathaswamy (Shiva) is free, and the temple additionally
offers a special early-morning Spatika (crystal) Lingam darshan and
paid quicker-entry darshan tickets during busy hours.

Most pilgrims combine their darshan with the customary bath in the 22 sacred
theerthams (holy wells) inside the temple. This guide explains the
darshan timings, what Spatika and “sparisa” (touch) darshan mean, the
22-theertham bath, the dress code, and how to reach Rameswaram — all
drawn from the temple’s official Tamil Nadu HR&CE portal and other public
sources.

Ramanathaswamy Temple darshan timings

The temple is managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments
(HR&CE) Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. According to the official
temple portal, the sanctum opens in the pre-dawn hours and closes for a midday
break before reopening in the afternoon. General darshan is free for all
devotees.

What is Spatika Lingam darshan?

The Spatika (Sphatika) Lingam is a crystal lingam traditionally said to have
been installed at Rameswaram by Adi Shankaracharya. It is brought out for a
special darshan in the early morning, generally between about
5:00 AM and 6:00 AM, during the auspicious pre-dawn Brahma
Muhurtam. Devotees regard this crystal-lingam darshan as unique to Rameswaram
and spiritually significant. A small darshan ticket is charged for it at the
temple counter; the amount is modest and is set by the temple, so confirm the
current rate on the day. Because slots fill early, pilgrims who want this
darshan typically reach the temple well before opening.

Sparisa (touch) darshan and the two lingams

The sanctum at Rameswaram enshrines two lingams: the
Ramalingam (traditionally said to have been fashioned from sand by
Sita for Lord Rama’s worship) and the Vishwalingam (said to have been
brought by Hanuman from Kailash), which by Rama’s instruction is worshipped
first.

“Sparisa” comes from sparsam, meaning touch. A
sparisa (touch) darshan refers to a closer form of worship in which
devotees are allowed near the sanctum to offer worship at close quarters
— as against viewing the deity only from the queue line — often in
connection with an abhishekam (ceremonial bathing of the lingam). The exact
arrangement, timing and any ticket for such close darshan or abhishekam
participation are decided by the temple and can change, and they are not
consistently published online. If this is your specific aim, verify the
current arrangement directly with the temple’s official channels or at the
counter rather than relying on third-party sites.

On busy days, in addition to free general darshan, the temple offers optional
paid darshan tickets that provide comparatively quicker entry to the sanctum.
Publicly reported tiers include a special darshan and a faster “quick” darshan
at modest, temple-fixed rates, alongside the small Spatika Lingam darshan
ticket. Ticket prices and availability are set by the HR&CE administration
and are best confirmed at the official temple counters on the day of your
visit; avoid third-party “booking” pages that add charges or claim to sell
temple entry.

The 22 theerthams (sacred wells) bath

A distinctive Rameswaram ritual is bathing in the temple’s
22 theerthams — 22 sacred wells located within the
temple complex. The number 22 is traditionally linked to the 22 arrows in Lord
Rama’s quiver. Temple attendants draw water from each well and pour it over
pilgrims in sequence.

  • Reported timing: about 5:30 AM – 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM
    – 7:00 PM.
  • Ticket: a small per-person fee for the 22-well bath, bought
at the temple counter (near the entry gate).
  • Custom: many pilgrims first take a dip at
Agni Theertham (the sea shore just east of the temple) at dawn,
then proceed to the 22 wells, and finally change into dry traditional
clothes before joining the darshan queue.
  • Tip: carry a change of clothes and a towel; you cannot
enter the inner sanctum in wet clothes.

Dress code

Rameswaram follows a traditional temple dress code. Men commonly wear a dhoti
(veshti) with or without an upper cloth, or trousers with a shirt; women wear
a saree, half-saree or salwar-kameez with dupatta. Shorts, sleeveless tops,
mini-skirts and other revealing western wear are discouraged. As above, dry,
modest traditional attire is expected for entry into the sanctum after the
theertham bath.
