What is Tirumala Pavithrotsavam?

Pavithrotsavam is one of the most sacred annual rituals performed at Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala, aimed at purifying the temple premises and correcting any ritualistic lapses committed knowingly or unknowingly throughout the year.

This three-day religious event is known as a temple cleansing ritual and is often referred to as the “Festival of Purification.”

Ritual Highlights of Pavithrotsavam

Day 1: Ankurarpanam

  • A symbolic ritual of seed sowing, signifying new beginnings
  • Priests chant Vedic mantras and prepare the sanctum for purification

Day 2: Pavitra Homam

  • Sacred fire rituals are performed using Pavitra malas (holy garlands made of special threads)
  • Snapana Tirumanjanam (Abhishekam) is done to the Utsava Murthis

Day 3: Maha Purnahuti

  • Final offerings made into the Yagashala fire
  • Holy threads (Pavitra Malas) are adorned to the deities as a mark of cleansing and completion

  • Corrects ritual mistakes or omissions that occurred during the year
  • Maintains spiritual sanctity of the temple
  • A rare and powerful opportunity for devotees to witness Vedic traditions

Who Can Participate?

TTD allows limited devotees to participate in Pavithrotsavam on payment of special tickets (available offline).
Those present in Tirumala during these dates can also witness processions and rituals outside the temple from designated areas.

Is Darshan Available During Pavithrotsavam?

Yes, darshan for devotees continues as usual, but:

  • There might be delays in darshan timings due to special rituals inside the sanctum
  • VVIP and break darshan slots might be temporarily modified during the rituals
  • Free and ₹300 Special Entry Darshan continue with adjustments

Pavitra Mala Details

The Pavitra malas used in the rituals are:

  • Made of sacred thread dyed with turmeric and vermillion
  • Woven by select TTD weavers and temple artisans
  • Offered to the Lord with full Vedic chanting and later distributed to select donors

Devotee Instructions

  • Reach Vaikuntham Q Complex early if you plan darshan during these days
  • Carry water and food, as waiting time may be slightly higher
  • Follow all instructions by TTD staff and volunteers for smooth temple movement

Editor’s Note — Tirumala Festivals 2026 Update

The Salakatla Brahmotsavam 2026, Navaratri Brahmotsavam, Pushpa Yagam, Rathasapthami, Teppotsavam, and Pavitrotsavam schedules at Tirumala are published by the TTD Board annually. As per the TTD Parabhava Nama Samvatsara Panchangam (released 19 March 2026), Vaikuntha Ekadasi 2026–27 is observed in January 2027 — pilgrims planning Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan should book accordingly when TTD opens its dedicated quota window.

Crowding during Garuda Seva and Chakrasnanam days is extreme — plan accommodation and darshan bookings weeks in advance.
