The Aadi Kirthigai is a major festival in India. The Aadi Kirthigai is celebrated for Lord Murugan yearly once. This is the most celebrated festival in the state of Tamilnadu. This Aadi Kirthigai is celebrated on the Kirthigai day of the month of Aadi. Hence the name. On this day the pilgrims will take the kavadi which is an offering to the Lord to the temple. The Murugan temple will be full of crowds on this day. Yearly lakhs of pilgrims will be taking the Kavadi to the Murugan temple. The pilgrims who offer Kavadi to Lord Murugan will be celebrating the Aadi Kirthigai with the kavadi.

The pilgrims who don’t take the Aadi Kirthigai can do the Aadi Kirthigai Murugan Pooja at home. This is not a specific vratham but can be said as the pooja. Below is the brief procedure for the devotees who want to perform the Aadi Kirthigai Murugam Pooja or Vratham on this day.

  • On the Aadi Kirthigai day, the devotees will be waking up in the morning. Most of the pilgrims will be doing the Pooja in the afternoon with the offering of the Prasadam
  • The pilgrims will be cleaning the home and the pooja mandir. The devotees will be decorating the home and the pooja mandir. The devotees need to have Lord Murugan idol or else a photo for the Aadi Kirthigai pooja
  • Once the decoration is done, the devotees will be preparing the prasadam for the lord. The food items like Pulihora, Jaggery rice, Vada and other items will be prepared for the Lord. Payasam also will be prepared on this day
  • Then the devotees will be doing pooja by chanting the mantra “Harom Hara” for the lord. The 108 names of Lord Murugan also can be chanted. After this, the pooja can be concluded with the harathi and eating the prasadam.
