How to download TTD’s Potana Bhagavatam and devotional e-books for free

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) publishes Bammera Pothana’s Andhra Maha Bhagavatamu — popularly called Potana Bhagavatam — along with hundreds of other sacred texts and its Sapthagiri monthly magazine, and it offers digital editions of many of them free of charge. The single official place to read and download these e-books is TTD’s own e-publications portal, ebooks.tirumala.org. There you can open the eight volumes of Potana Bhagavatam in Telugu, browse the full Sapthagiri archive, and access a large library of Vaishnava literature without any payment or, in most cases, without registration. This guide explains what is available, how the official portal works, and how to tell a genuine TTD file from an unofficial copy.

What is Potana Bhagavatam?

Bammera Pothana (c. 1450–1510) was a Telugu poet from Bammera village in present-day Jangaon district, Telangana. He was the first poet to render the Sanskrit Bhagavata Purana into Telugu, and his work — Andhra Maha Bhagavatamu — became a cornerstone of the Bhakti movement, making complex Vaishnava scripture accessible to ordinary devotees. Revered as a Sahaja Kavi (“natural poet”), Pothana wove devotion, poetry and philosophy together so memorably that verses such as those on Prahlada and Gajendra are still recited across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana today.

TTD printed a widely praised edition of this work about a decade and a half ago, valued for its print quality, faithful script and complete coverage of Pothana’s text. Because demand for the printed set stayed strong, TTD later digitised it and made the volumes available as free e-books on its e-publications platform.

Where to download it: the official TTD e-publications portal

TTD hosts its digital library at ebooks.tirumala.org. On that portal the Potana Bhagavatam collection appears as eight volumes (Volume I to Volume VIII) in Telugu, authored under “Potana Mahakavi.” Each volume shows a cover thumbnail linked to an online reader; you click a title or cover to open that volume. The portal also lets you filter the whole catalogue by language — it lists hundreds of Telugu titles alongside English, Tamil, Hindi, Sanskrit and Kannada works — so the Bhagavatam sits within a much larger free collection.

To find the set, open ebooks.tirumala.org and either search for “Potana” / “Bhagavatam” or browse by author “Potana Mahakavi.” The reader opens each volume directly, and the digitised copies are PDF-style files that display on any modern phone, tablet or computer.

Beyond the Bhagavatam: other free TTD devotional e-books

The same portal carries far more than one work. TTD’s overall publications programme runs to roughly 4,000 titles across Telugu and other languages, and a growing share is being digitised. On ebooks.tirumala.org you can look for:

  • Sapthagiri magazine — TTD’s spiritual monthly, published since 1949 and now issued in six languages (Telugu, Sanskrit, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and English). The portal hosts a large back-catalogue of issues carrying discourses, temple features, festival notes and scholars’ Q&A.
  • Sacred texts and epics — devotional literature including editions from TTD’s Bhagavatam and Mahabharatam series.
  • Panchangam — the Telugu Hindu almanac published by TTD.
  • Balabharathi — TTD’s children’s devotional series.

Availability of individual titles and languages changes as TTD adds more scanned material, so if a specific volume or language is not listed yet, check the portal again later rather than relying on an unofficial re-upload.

How the official portal works

  • Browse or search: use the language filters or the search box (by title, author or series) to locate a work.
  • Open the reader: click a cover or title to read the volume online.
  • Free access: the devotional e-books are offered without charge, and most open without a paywall.
  • Current periodicals: for the latest Sapthagiri issues, TTD also uses its main portal (tirumala.org) under Publications; older issues sit in the e-publications archive.

Spotting the genuine TTD file (and staying safe)

Because these texts are popular, many third-party blogs, forums and file-sharing pages re-host copies of TTD PDFs. The only source we recommend is TTD’s own ebooks.tirumala.org. Sticking to the official portal means you get the correct, unaltered edition, you avoid tampered or mislabelled files, and you support TTD’s own digitisation effort. If a page asks you to pay for a “free” TTD e-book, enter card details, or install extra software to “unlock” a download, treat it as unofficial and close it.
