We have chosen to leave the two unverified rows unverified rather than repeat them as fact. Where a temple fee is quoted confidently across dozens of websites but appears on none of the devasthanam’s own pages, the safe assumption is that someone copied it once and everyone copied it again.
The temple, in TTD’s own words
The shrine takes its name from Maharshi Kapila, who according to the tradition TTD records immersed himself in ardent penance of Lord Shiva at this spot. The Shiva Linga here is swayambhu — self-manifested — and is worshipped as Sri Kapileswara Swamy.
The site includes a sacred lake and a waterfall, both held to be highly pious. TTD notes that the temple was developed over centuries by the Pallava kings, the Vijayanagara kings and the Tirumala Mahants, among others — which is why the complex reads as layered rather than of a single period.
The most significant belief attached to the place concerns Karthika Pournami. TTD records that on the full-moon day of the Karthika month, all the theerthas — the holy water springs of the three worlds of heaven, earth and the netherworld — converge in Kapila Theertham. That is why the bathing crowds here on that day are out of all proportion to the temple’s normal footfall.
Festivals observed here
- Maha Sivaratri — the temple’s biggest night of the year, with TTD making dedicated arrangements for the all-night vigil and darshan queues.
- Annual Brahmotsavams — a multi-day festival with the deity taken in procession on successive vahanams, including the Nandi Vahanam.
- Karteeka Deepotsavam and Karthika Pournami — the theertha-convergence observance described above.
- Annabhishekam — the abhishekam of the linga with cooked rice, conducted here as a special-day observance.
- Vinayaka Chavithi — also observed at this temple.

Kapila Theertham sits at the foot of the Tirumala hills at the northern edge of Tirupati town, which makes it one of the easiest of the Tirupati temples to fit into a trip — most pilgrims visit it either before going up the hill or after coming down.

The waterfall depends entirely on rainfall. After a good north-east monsoon it runs strongly and the tank fills; in a dry stretch it can be reduced to a trickle. If seeing the falls is the point of your visit, go in the months following the monsoon rather than in high summer.
Practical notes
- Confirm the current seva list, timings and fees on TTD’s official portal when you book. They are revised, and the temple’s own counter is the authority on the day.
- If you intend to bathe in the pushkarini, carry a change of clothes; facilities are basic.
- Crowds on Maha Sivaratri and Karthika Pournami are very heavy for a temple of this size. Allow far longer than a normal-day visit.
- Do not pay any private party to arrange a seva here. TTD does not appoint agents for its temples.
- Mondays and Pradosham days draw larger-than-usual crowds at Shiva temples generally, so factor that in.
