For any accommodation booking, please use the official temple portal or contact the property directly through their own verified channels.

Pilgrims visiting Mantralayam have two main kinds of places to stay: the guest houses run by the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Matha (SRS Matha) itself, which sit closest to the temple and are booked only through the Matha’s official website, and a range of government and privately run guest houses and lodges in the town — including the state guest house often called “Karnataka Bhavan.” The Matha’s own rooms are usually the first choice because they are within walking distance of the Brindavan, but they are limited and fill quickly, so it helps to understand how each option works before you travel.

Where pilgrims stay in Mantralayam

Mantralayam is a small pilgrim town in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, on the banks of the Tungabhadra river, right on the border with Karnataka. Because it exists almost entirely to serve devotees coming for the darshan of Sri Raghavendra Swamy, most accommodation is clustered within a short walk or auto ride of the temple. Broadly, your choices are:

  • SRS Matha guest houses — the temple’s own rooms, booked only on the official Matha portal or at its reception office.
  • Government / state guest houses — including the Karnataka state guest house and Andhra Pradesh Tourism (APTDC) properties, aimed at general visitors and pilgrims.
  • Private lodges and hotels — independently run, spread across the town, booked directly with each property.

Sri Raghavendra Swamy Matha guest houses

The Matha maintains a large stock of rooms for pilgrims — well over a thousand rooms across several blocks, most within a few hundred metres of the temple. These are the rooms most devotees try for first, thanks to their proximity and direct Matha management.

Rooms are offered in a few categories, typically Non-AC rooms, AC rooms, and AC suite/deluxe rooms. Facilities are simple and clean: beds with an attached bathroom, hot water available in fixed morning and evening slots in most blocks, and basic furnishing. Tariffs vary by room type and can change during festival months, so treat any figure you see online as indicative only and confirm the exact amount shown on the official payment page for your chosen dates.

A key point to understand is the split between online and walk-in rooms. Only a portion of the Matha’s rooms are released for advance online booking; the remainder are held for “current booking” through the Central Reception Office (CRO), where pilgrims apply in person on arrival for same-day allotment subject to availability. On ordinary days walk-in rooms are usually available, but during weekends, holidays and festival periods the online quota can be exhausted within hours of release and walk-in rooms may run out too.

For booking, the only official channel is the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Matha website, srsmatha.org (Online Services → Room Booking). Advance online booking generally opens about a month ahead of the stay date. The Matha does not provide single-person accommodation for security reasons — rooms are allotted for two or more adults — and online bookings are typically non-cancellable and non-refundable, with no change of date or time permitted, so choose your dates carefully before paying.

Karnataka Bhavan and government guest houses

“Karnataka Bhavan” is the name pilgrims commonly use for the Karnataka state guest house in Mantralayam. Because Sri Raghavendra Swamy has a very large following in Karnataka, the state government maintains a guest house here for its officials, dignitaries and visitors from Karnataka, and it also accommodates pilgrims subject to availability. It is located in the town near the APSRTC bus station area, a short distance from the temple, and typically offers both AC and Non-AC rooms as simple, affordable options.

Because this property is government-managed, its room availability, tariffs and booking rules are set by the managing department and are not always published on a single consumer website. Rather than relying on third-party listings, it is best to confirm current details and reservation procedure through official Karnataka government / Muzrai (religious endowments) channels or at the guest house reception itself. Availability for general pilgrims can be limited, especially when officials are visiting.

In addition, Andhra Pradesh Tourism (APTDC) operates budget accommodation in the region under the Haritha/Punnami brand, bookable through the official AP Tourism portal. These government-run options are plainer than private hotels but dependable and reasonably priced.

How online booking works at the Matha

If you want to reserve an SRS Matha room in advance rather than depend on walk-in availability, the process is straightforward but the rooms are competitive:

  • Advance online rooms are released roughly a month before the stay date.
  • Because only part of the room stock goes online, weekend and festival rooms can be taken within a few hours of release.
  • After payment, download and keep the receipt/confirmation, and carry original photo ID for the adults staying.
  • Check in within the window printed on your booking; late arrival can affect your allotment.

If online rooms are sold out for your dates, plan to reach the Central Reception Office (CRO) early on the day of arrival to try for a current-booking room, and keep a backup lodge or government guest house in mind in case the Matha is full.

Getting to Mantralayam

The nearest railhead is Mantralayam Road railway station (on the Guntakal–Wadi line), around 12–15 km from the temple town, with buses and autos to the temple. The town is also served by APSRTC and Karnataka (KSRTC) buses from cities such as Kurnool, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Raichur. Once in the town, the temple, guest houses and the CRO are within a compact area you can cover on foot or by auto.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay if I want to be closest to the temple?

The Sri Raghavendra Swamy Matha’s own guest house blocks are the closest, mostly within a few hundred metres of the Brindavan, which is why they are the first choice for most pilgrims.

How do I book an SRS Matha room?

Use the official Matha website, srsmatha.org, under Online Services → Room Booking. Only a portion of rooms is available online; the rest are given out as current bookings at the Central Reception Office on the day of arrival.

Is single-person accommodation available at the Matha?

No. For security reasons the Matha does not allot rooms to a single person; rooms are provided for two or more adults.

What is “Karnataka Bhavan” in Mantralayam?

It is the informal name for the Karnataka state government guest house in the town. It offers AC and Non-AC rooms and accommodates pilgrims subject to availability; confirm current rules through official Karnataka government channels or at its reception.

Can I get a room on arrival without booking online?

Often yes on ordinary days, through the CRO current-booking counter. On weekends, holidays and festival days rooms can run out, so advance planning or an early arrival is safer.

Are online bookings refundable if my plans change?

Generally no — Matha online bookings are usually non-cancellable and non-refundable with no date/time change, so confirm your dates before paying. Always check the current policy on the official portal.
