The Sri Vakulamatha (Vakula Devi) Temple at Peruru near Tirupati is generally open for darshan from about 5:30 AM to 12:00 noon and again from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM daily. Vakula Devi is revered in the Tirumala tradition as the foster-mother of Lord Sri Venkateswara, and her small hill temple sits on the Peruru Banda hillock a short drive from Tirupati city. This independent guide explains the legend, the temple’s significance, the darshan schedule, and how to reach it. Timings can change on festival days and during special sevas, so treat the schedule below as indicative and confirm on the official TTD portal before you travel.

Where is the Vakulamatha Temple, Peruru?

The temple stands on the Peruru Banda hillock in Peruru village, on the outskirts of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. It is roughly 8 km from Tirupati city centre, about 5 km from Tiruchanoor (the Sri Padmavathi Ammavari temple town), and around 10 km from Tirumala. Because Vakula Devi is honoured as Lord Venkateswara’s foster-mother, the shrine is a meaningful add-on for pilgrims already visiting Tirumala and Tiruchanoor.

The legend of Vakula Devi

According to the Tirumala sthala purana, the story of Vakula Devi reaches back to the Dwapara Yuga. Yashoda, the foster-mother who raised Lord Krishna, grieved that she never had the chance to witness her beloved son’s wedding. Krishna consoled her with a promise: in a future age he would return in another form, and she would arrange and see his marriage. In the Kali Yuga, Lord Vishnu manifested as Sri Venkateswara on the seven hills, and Yashoda was reborn as Vakula Devi, his foster-mother. Fulfilling the ancient boon, she helped bring about Lord Venkateswara’s marriage to Sri Padmavathi, the daughter of King Akasa Raja. In this way the wish left unfulfilled in a previous age was finally granted.

Why the temple is significant

The Vakulamatha shrine is deeply tied to the daily worship of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala. Two traditions in particular are cited by devotees:

  • Facing the seven hills: The temple is said to have been built so that Vakula Devi’s face turns toward the Tirumala hills where her foster-son resides, expressing a mother’s constant gaze upon her child.
  • Naivedyam offered to the mother first: In keeping with the mother-son bond, tradition holds that food offerings (naivedyam) are dedicated to Vakula Devi before they are offered to Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala — a mark of the affection and respect due to a mother.

The temple had fallen into neglect for a long period after flourishing under earlier patronage. TTD took up a lengthy restoration of the hillock shrine beginning in 2011, rebuilding it in line with Agama tradition, and the renovated temple was formally reopened to devotees on 23 July 2022. Today it is maintained by TTD alongside the other temples in the Tirumala-Tirupati network.
