TTD Cracks Down on Tirupati Laddu GI Tag Misuse with Legal Notices

TTD issues legal notices to vendors misusing Tirupati Laddu GI tag, preserving the sanctity of the sacred prasadam and protecting devotees’ trust.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has initiated legal proceedings against several vendors and online platforms for unauthorized use of the “Tirupati Laddu” name, which holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This action aims to protect the sanctity and authenticity of the sacred prasadam offered at the Tirumala temple.

Legal Notices Issued to Offending Vendors

TTD, through Sahadeva Law Chambers, has served legal notices to multiple entities, including online platforms such as PushMyCart (operated by Mahita LLC) and Transact Foods Limited. These vendors were found to be selling or promoting products under the “Tirupati Laddu” name without authorization, misleading consumers by implying a connection with the Tirumala temple.

Protecting the Sanctity of the Sacred Prasadam

The Tirupati Laddu received its GI tag in 2009 under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. This designation restricts the use of the name to laddus prepared within the Tirumala temple premises, following a prescribed method under the supervision of temple priests. Unauthorized use not only infringes legal rights but also undermines the spiritual sanctity of the offering.

Vendor Responses and TTD’s Commitment

In response to the legal notices, PushMyCart has suspended the infringing product listings pending a legal review. Other platforms have also taken down similar listings following TTD’s action.

TTD Executive Officer J. Syamala Rao emphasized, “The Tirupati Laddu is not just a product but a sacred prasadam with deep spiritual and cultural value. We are committed to taking all necessary legal steps to prevent its misuse and protect the trust of crores of devotees worldwide.”

Historical Significance of the Tirupati Laddu

The practice of offering laddus at the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple began in 1715. The laddu has evolved over the centuries and is now prepared in the temple’s kitchen, known as ‘Potu,’ by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. Over 600 people, including skilled cooks known as ‘Pachakas,’ are involved in its production. The laddu received its GI tag in 2009 to protect its authenticity.
